How long is a session?
Sessions usually go for 50 minutes. We know peoples time is precious and we like to be on time for your appointment and for the people who have appointments after you, so will endeavour to maintain this agreed session duration.
How many sessions will I need?
The number of sessions required differs from person to person. We track how you are progressing against the goals you set in your first session, and we use some brief outcome measures in each session to track how the sessions are proceeding. It has been found that having more frequent sessions early on, can result in better outcomes for people.
What do I need to do before my first appointment?
Once we have been in touch with you and made your initial appointment,
you will be emailed:
- An electronic client registration form for you to complete.
- Some questions to prompt you to think what you want to achieve
during the sessions. - Information about fees and payment processes.
What can I expect from the first session?
The first session involves talking about what it is that brings you to seek help and what you are wanting to get out of the sessions. This involves talking about any current concerns you have and other relevant life experiences you have experienced. Often, we use some brief questionnaires to track how you are feeling over the course of the sessions. It is good for you to think about your goals associated with reaching out for assistance. One way to think about this is to ask yourself “If the sessions were helpful for you, what would you notice was different in your life in the future?”
How does therapy work?
Seeing a clinical psychologist is an opportunity to talk about your concerns, set some goals you want to achieve and to develop some different strategies in managing situations, managing your emotions or being able to do new activities that you might currently find hard to do. Through all of this, you can gain different perspectives on situations that you might find challenging and new ways of managing these that gets you closer to achieve what you want out of life. With all of the skills that can be practiced, it is important to remember that you are in control of any of the new skills you might want to try as different skills fit with different people.
Practicing some of these skills is an important part of the sessions. We like to think that any new skill, like learning a musical instrument or playing a new sport, involves practice to form the neural pathways and allow us to get better. We think the same applies for the skills that are taught in the sessions with the clinical psychologist.
To help support people with practicing new skills, we provide some on-line skills training programs that have a focus on further practice to develop these new skills.
Do you provide face to face or telehealth appointments?
We can provide both face-to-face or telehealth appointments. If conducting telehealth appointments, video-based services are preferred, though telephone consultations are also possible.

What are the fees?
At Wellness Through Health, we are committed to having transparency of the cost of a course of therapy for clients, so they can make an informed decision at the commencement of treatment.
For people accessing assistance through Medicare with a mental
health care plan
There will be a gap of $70 per session, which will be capped by Wellness Through Health at a maximum gap payment of $560 for 12 months from the date of your Doctors referral. Once this maximum gap payment of $560 is reached, future sessions for the 12 months will be bulk billed, providing you have a valid referral and sessions able to be utilised on that referral. This process resets every 12 months from the date of your subsequent Doctors referral.
We believe that this is an innovative approach that allows greater clarity of
the financial commitment for a 12-month period and helps people decide if we are the appropriate service for them. Often therapy is more beneficial with more frequent sessions earlier. Having the clarity regarding the maximum financial commitment can give people confidence in planning these sessions.
For people self-funding the service or using private health insurance
extras cover: $200 per session (up to 50 minutes).
NDIS: For people who are either self-managed of plan managed,
then the current NDIS fee is charged.
